Many of you may or may not know, but October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. This annual campaign helps increase awareness about the disease and encourages people to get involved in the fight. Throughout the month, several companies, nonprofits and brands are using social media to build support communities and promote funding and special events.
Social media is a fantastic resource that enables millions worldwide to connect and share their challenges and success stories with one another. Sites such as Facebook give people the opportunity to “like” and share stories, while Twitter allows organizations to spread their message and up to date information quickly through “retweets.”
Susan G. Komen For the Cure Foundation is using all of their resources as part of a social media campaign to encourage social media activists to upload photos, petition the UN to make cancer part of their millennium goals, and take a quiz on breast health awareness.
A few other brands that really caught my eye were Estée Lauder and Avon. To celebrate 20 years of its Breast Cancer Awareness campaign, Estée Lauder launched a Facebook Timelines app called “20 Years of Courage.” On Pinterest, Avon Foundation launched a campaign called Pin It to End It, which donates $5 for every photo pinned with the hashtag #pinittoendit.
Here’s to a strong fight this October!!
