    DIY SEO is the process of improving your site’s organic search visibility without paying an agency or expensive SEO tools to do the job for you. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with doing SEO in-house, but it’s important to understand the basics so you’re making the most of your time and getting the results you’re looking for.     Step 1: Keyword Research

    The first step of DIY SEO is determining what keyword you need to rank for. If your brand isn’t well known, you’ll have to rank for non-branded keywords, which are common tongue words and phrases that either describe what you do or how you do it. This should always start with a google search. 

    To find the best search terms, ask yourself a simple question: “If I were looking for this product or service, how would I search for it?” Search engines like Google and Yahoo have been widely utilized for over 20 years now, and most of us know exactly how to find a product especially if we’re knowledgeable about the subject. Trust that you know 

    You’ll notice that when you start to search for a term, your search term is appended with several variations. If you’re trying to rank for GRC, which stands for “Governance, Risk, and Compliance,” you won’t want to target that term directly. Instead play around with the search bar to find longer phrases since those are usually far easier to rank for. 

    Another useful way to find keywords is leveraging AI tools like Chat GPT and Google Gemini, with some prodding you can typically get some good ideas around more general subjects. In this instance we’ve asked Gemini “If you were looking for forensic engineering, what would you google search?” The original response was too broad, so we then asked it to be more specific. The results gave us some great ideas around some specific sub-services related to the parent topic:

    Step 2: On-Page and Off-Page SEO

    Once you’ve determined your subject and created your webpage, you’ll need to optimize it. Most Content Management Systems [CMS] like WordPress and Wix have SEO plugins that you can download for free, but it’s still good to know some basic best practices. 

    On-page SEO involves marking up the visible part of the webpage (the one you’re looking at now) to make sure that all of your target keywords are in the body text and you’re including them within your header tags. In this instance the, “Step 2: On-Page and Off-Page SEO” is one of our header tags because we believe that it’s one of the most important parts of DIY SEO- that’s the same type of process you should be thinking about when laying out pages. 

    Other on-page SEO best practices include:

    • Include your target keyword in the title 
    • Putting keyword related to your parent topics in the headers of your page
    • Using bulleted lists to make information more readable
    • Adding images and video content to make content more dynamic

    Off-page SEO deals directly with non-visible elements of the page. Within your page builder, you’ll typically see blank areas that talk about meta fields, local schema, social markup, etc… The most important thing to denote on these pages are the meta title (usually the same text as your regular title) and your meta description (a brief description of what a user can expect to find on the page if they’re looking at search results. Populating these fields with keywords is another great way to improve the rankings of your webpages. 

    The most important part of on-page SEO is content quality. Make sure, as you write the document, that the information you’re providing is helpful and digestible to a normal user. Google values websites that create helpful, reliable, people-first content, and automatically assigns higher rankings to sites that do so on a regular and consistent basis. 

    Other off-page SEO best practices include: 

    • Setting alt attributes to images to rank in Google image results
    • Setting schema (or structured data) on local, about, and other niche page types
    • Ensuring that your URL contains the keyword you want to rank for
    • Ensuring that meta data and URLs aren’t overly long and accurately convey what’s on the page

    If you’re a local business, you realize the importance of getting in front of the people in your area. One of the most effective tools to get in front of local audiences is through your Google Business Profile

    After following the instructions given via Google about how to claim your business, you’re ready to start optimizing. In this context more information is better; making sure your address is correct, business hours are updated, your asking your clients for reviews, and you accurately designating your service areas are all best practices. 

    Step 4: Technical SEO + Tracking

    Typically, Tech SEO issues only plague large sites, but it’s good to keep a pulse on both site performance and organic performance. We recommend Google Search Console as it only gives organic data rather than GA4’s all encompassing site traffic information.

    It’s that time of year: you’re beginning to plan your company’s high-profile annual event that happens…well…annually. From location logistics to the run-of-show, invitations to the open bar – and even cementing this year’s sure-to-be-inspiring theme – there are many things to plan and consider. But what’s the best way to get the word out about your amazing event? And how do you keep the energy palpable throughout the program? Here are four ways in which video can amplify your annual event.

    1. Make Video Your Voice Early and Often

    Repurposing last year’s content to create a new mission statement hype video tailored to this year’s event is a great way to attract your audience’s attention. Or, simply rebrand last year’s published event recap videos with new event branding and call-to-action. Don’t have content from last year? Use motion graphics to emphasize your messaging for the event. Additionally, getting really short – think 10 seconds or less – is a simple but effective way to to beat the drum in the weeks leading up to the event.

    2. Make a Splash Out the Gate

    Have a keynote speaker? Produce a documentary-style video with him/her a few months in advance, and the use it as pre-roll during the event. This is an exciting way to provide background context as a lead-in to introduce the keynote speaker live at the event. And as a bonus, this video would become a great piece of owned-content that could be used to promote the event in advance and/or to live in perpetuity on your YouTube channel after the event.

    And to build the hype – and keep it – throughout the event, create a sizzle-video that introduces the key players and concepts. Consider using stylized motion graphics to kick-off the whole event and set the tone. Then, create shorter videos with the same aesthetic to segue from one subject matter to the next.     The obvious is to record video of the place, people and activities surrounding the event. Man-on-the-street interviews will capture not only the key messaging of the event, but the raw emotion and excitement of the experience through the attendees’ actual voice. Combine that with flashy, fast-paced b-roll, and you have an engaging piece of content for use on social as a recap, and/or as a promotional piece for next year’s annual event (see bullet #1).     Some of our more ambitious clients go a step further and have us edit content on site; either as daily recaps for social engagement, or as the final piece of content built into the program on the last day of the event (see bullet #3).     Using Infographics for Creative Content Marketing

    Brands and organizations are moving more heavily into content marketing, and the demand to produce a stream of creative work means marketing managers are looking for ways to get it done at scale. One way to approach this is to develop a content package consisting of related pieces that can be used and re-purposed in a variety of ways, thereby extending the life of creative assets over the course of many months or a year.

    Does your company participate in trade shows? Conduct surveys? Provide thought leadership? Run paid search and social campaigns? Have need for sales collateral? By looking at these needs holistically, you may be able to develop an approach and a content package that will provide assets for all of them, and at a steady cadence to fill out your content calendar.

    How does this work?

    Infographics are often the jumping-off point for a content package. Infographics typically incorporate 6-12 individual “data points”, often gleaned from a survey or set of features; each data point is displayed as an illustrated or graphic element paired with brief descriptive text. Infographics are well known for their eye-catching qualities and when printed, make great handouts at trade shows and conferences. They can be hard to digest on a smartphone screen, however. That’s one reason why it makes sense to turn your infographics into animated videos.

    Get moving!

    Animated videos have a reputation for being expensive, but many marketers don’t realize that half the labor involved is in the development of illustrations and copy. Your infographic has already done that work, so you may be halfway to the creation of an animated piece. Animated videos are easy to digest on phones, can be used to populate your site and social channels, and look great in your trade show booth – especially when there’s a matching piece of print collateral to take away.

    Another approach is to cut an infographic into pieces. Each data point can be made into a small stand alone infostamp image, or animated into a GIF. Presto! Now you’ve got 6-12 pieces for your content calendar. Use them to highlight  individual points that you flesh out in a post, point viewers back to the “master” infographic or animated piece, drop them into an email template, or use them in a paid search or social campaign.

    How far can it go?

    Take a real-world example. One client came to us seeking marketing support for a new product launch at a trade show. We began by creating an infographic that mixes survey results and product details, basically framing a market problem and our client’s solution. The infographic will:

    • Work as creative material for trade press
    • Act as a printed handout at the event
    • Become an animated video for display on monitors around the booth, which will draw the attention of passers-by (and will later be repurposed as a lead-gen tool featured on their website’s new product page)
    • Transform into a set of 12 infostamps and GIFs, which will be used in paid and social outreach campaigns leading up to and after the show
    • Support sales teams

    Whew! That initial piece of infographic design turned into 14+ individual assets for use in a number of ways, and it was much less expensive than if each of those components had been considered separately. It’s all a part of building up a solid content library…but that’s a post for another day.
